How to grow Horseradish?

- Latin Family: Brassicaceae
- Latin Genus: Armoracia
- Ease of Growing: Easy
- Growing Type: Perennial
Once you plant Horseradish it can be difficult to remove, as any fragment of root left in the ground can grow into a new plant. For this reason it is best planted in a remote place, where it can be left to its own devices. You can also plant it in a container, partly buried in the ground (it needs to be deep). The latter also makes harvesting easy, simply dig up the container and dump it out on to the ground.

Horseradish History
Horseradish is native to Eastern Europe, but it has been widely cultivated in temperate areas around the world and is now naturalized in most of them. This is typical of this persistent plant, where it is planted, it stays.
Soil Preference
- PH (min/max): 5.0 - 7.5
- PH Ideal (min/max): 6.5 - 7.0
Horseradish will grow in almost any well-drained soil, but becomes larger when growing in a rich, moist soil with lots of organic matter.
How to care for Horseradish?
Horseradish is the ultimate no-maintenance plant, just put it in the ground and it will grow there (even if you eventually try to get rid of it).
Water
Horseradish is quite drought tolerant, but grows larger if watered regularly.
Fertilizer
Horseradish doesn’t need the pampered soil and growing conditions to be found in the intensive beds. It will be happy in almost any vacant spot in the garden.
Horseradish has been propagated vegetatively for so long that it doesn’t usually produce seed. Of course it doesn’t need to, it saves itself.
Light
Part shade
Horseradish prefers full sun, but will still do well in part shade.
Conditions:Cold, Cool, Warm, Hot
Season:Long Season
Storage
The intact root of Horseradish can be stored in the refrigerator for a month.
Storage Req: Refrigerator
Storage Temp: 35-40°F
Storage Length: 1-28 days
Normally horseradish is left in the ground until you want it. Harvest before the ground freezes (to make harvest easier). If left in the ground and the temperature rises above 45˚F, it will begin growing again.
Storage Req: Ground
Storage Temp: 0-35°F
Storage Length: 1-90 days
Problems
Persistent
Sometimes growing in a container is wise, since any little fragment of root will become a new plant.
