Red Stele
Phytophthora fragariae
This member of the notorious Phytophthora fungi attacks strawberries growing in cool, wet soil. It usually attacks plants in their second year, causing the roots to rot from the tip. Infected roots lack branches (they are called rats tails) and are reddish brown inside and whitish ouside. The loss of roots causes leaves to become discolored and plants to wilt during dry spells, which results in loss of vigor and poor production. If a plant is wilting and you suspect this disease, dig up a root in spring and examine it.
This disease is usually spread through infected planting stock, so use certified disease free plants (be wary of gifts from friends). The fungus is very persistent in the soil and can survive for years, so it’s important to keep it out. It is also important to have a well drained site (use raised beds if necessary). If you have a major problem, some varieties are resistant.
