How to grow Kumquat?
- Latin Family: Rutaceae
- Latin Genus: Citrus
- Ease of Growing: Easy
- Growing Type: Annual
The kumquat is a citrus fruit that kind of looks like an orange but is oval-shaped and much smaller (1-2 inches). People first grew kumquat trees, also known as fortunella, in China in the 1700s. The name “kumquat” combines the Chinese words “gam,” meaning gold, and “gwat,” another word for tangerines. The kumquat plant is native to Southern China. The earliest historical reference to kumquats appears in Imperial literature from the 12th century. They have long been cultivated in other parts of East Asia (Japan and Taiwan), South Asia (India), and Southeast Asia (especially the Philippines). They were introduced to Europe in 1846 by Robert Fortune, collector for the London Horticultural Society, and shortly thereafter were taken to North America.
